The Caravan Paid-Internship Program - 2009

Seeking true writer-journalists…

Are you a writer with an eye for detail?

Have you wished that newspaper and magazine writing were more engaging, personal and reached you like a conversation, while still feeding you with information, investigation, substance, true plots and dialogues?

In North America and Europe, such writing is known to many as New Journalism. Magazines such as The New Yorker, Harpers, Granta marked their ways of telling true stories in narrative writing.

In India, most of our journalism writing, as Tom Wolfe would’ve called it, “is like the standard announcer’s voice…a drag, a droning…” and we’re yet to let journalism marry literature in magazines. Our question hence is: do you have a burning desire to tell true stories—as a zealous journalist to get your feet dirty for facts, and as a writer to make it witty and engaging?

We suggest you take a look at The Caravan…

At The Caravan we’re trying to find that original unique voice of New Journalism in India. Building a writing tradition is a long haul and not easy. And we know we’ve to find those young voices from the talents who write really stylish passages in the undergrad classrooms, the intellectually curious girls frequenting the British Council, or even that nervous small town boy who just reached Delhi but is in the advantage of knowing the workings of the real rural India.

If you think telling true stories is what you want to do, here is a deal: The Caravan is announcing a paid-internship program for 2 to 3 months. If you’re selected, you will work with us in our editorial office in Delhi, go out, report and write true stories—anything from intimate human experiences to the large social and political events that shape our lives.

Your application should contain a) three-four writing samples published/unpublished b) two references c) copy of your CV and d) a cover letter on why you want to apply for The Caravan Paid-Internship Program.

The monthly stipend is Rs. 5,000/- plus travel allowances for reporting assignments.

Email the application to Vinod K. Jose, Senior Associate Editor, The Caravan at vinod.jose@delhipress.in and mark the subject: The Caravan Paid-Internship Program.

Deadline for the application: April 30 2009.
